Assignment Week #3

After watching the video on Work Sampling I felt more at ease than watching last week’s video on the Screeners. I think that the Work Sampling method is more for the benefit of the student than the Screeners. My reasoning for this is that while the Screener was used to label and give an exact score to the child, that could possibly deny them entry into a program, the Sampling Method used “As Expected” or “Needs Development” as a way to help the parents and the teachers give more support to the child. The Work Sampling seems helpful to the teacher because she/he can have a better understanding of how to guide instruction to individual students. This seems like it gives more power to the student because they are the ones that will  benefit from this kind of evaluation. I did not notice any underlying ranking system with the Work Sampling Method. I also liked that the Work Sampling program looked at the child in a more holistic way than the Screener program did. The Work Sampling prog...
loha everybody. I am taking this class because I am considering becoming a preschool teacher after I am done with my education. I am currently working as a behavioral technician with an autistic child and I work as a skills trainer at a middle school with an older child. I sometimes get to sub in preschool classes as a skills trainer. I took ECED 340 a couple years ago when I was working full time at a preschool. I have a lot of experience documenting the actions of children because I have to take data on children as part of my job. I do not have much experience assessing children because that is usually the role of the teacher or the BCBA (Board certified behavior analyst). Before my job with children I worked as a veterinary technician and then as a manager at a animal rescue sanctuary on Maui. I also have my own pet sitting business that I do on the side. I walk dogs and take care of people's pets while they are on holiday. I enjoy animals and children and hope that I can do my ...
Before watching these videos and reading these websites I had no idea what a screener  was or that teachers used these “kits” to evaluate children. I was left feeling uneasy because I think that using these types of developmental screeners at such an early age might do more harm than good. In a previous class I had read about the first intelligence tests that eventually led to the IQ tests. The people who made up these tests had a lot of power over people. These tests became very popular at Ellis Island and led to thousands of immigrants being sent home because they could not pass the test. However, the people who made these tests did not consider the background of these immigrants, nor a potential language barrier. These tests eventually led to the idea of eugenics, which gave Hitler validation to wipe out millions of people. I do not think that teachers intend to harm children with these screeners, but I see a red flag when an institution rates a child’s intelligence at such a yo...
